In plain terms

A mineral that sits on the skin and reflects UV rays. It is the cleanest of the sunscreen filters and one of only two the FDA still calls safe and effective.

What the evidence shows

Zinc oxide is the mineral that clean sunscreens are built around, and the evidence backs that reputation. It sits on the skin and reflects both UVA and UVB rather than soaking in, and it is one of only two filters the FDA still rates as safe and effective. The nanoparticle worry has been tested directly: when researchers imaged the skin of volunteers who used nanoparticle zinc oxide for five days, the particles stayed on the surface and in skin folds without entering the living layers or causing cell damage, and Europe's committee cleared it up to a quarter of a product by weight. So the concern that nano zinc soaks into the body through intact skin is not well supported; both nano and larger non-nano particles mostly stay put. Where size does matter is reactivity. Nano particles have far more surface area, which makes them more photocatalytic, generating more free radicals under sunlight, so a non-nano or a coated nano zinc is the more conservative pick, especially on broken or damaged skin where the barrier is weaker. Two other caveats apply to both sizes. Breathing it is a real concern, more so for the finer nano form, so spray and aerosol versions are the ones to skip in favor of a lotion or cream. And because zinc oxide is a mined mineral, it can carry trace heavy metals like lead unless well purified, so a brand that third-party tests its minerals and shows the results is the clean choice. Zinc is an essential nutrient your body already uses and carries none of the hormone or carcinogen questions of the chemical filters; a non-nano, tested, lotion form is about as clean as sun protection offers.

On the label

Listed as zinc oxide or CI 77947, and flagged as [nano] in some markets. A non-nano or coated-nano zinc in a lotion or cream is the most conservative pick: it skips the inhalation risk of sprays and the extra surface reactivity of bare nano particles. Because the mineral is mined, also favor a brand that third-party tests for heavy metals and publishes the results.
