In plain terms

The main UVA filter in chemical sunscreens. It does not carry oxybenzone's hormone problem, but it is unstable in sunlight and breaks down into reactive, cell-damaging byproducts under the very UV it is meant to block. Since stable mineral filters do the same job without that, it is one to step around.

What the evidence shows

Avobenzone is the main UVA filter in non-mineral sunscreens, and two things about it are reassuring: a 2025 toxicology review found no hormone effects on the estrogen, androgen, or thyroid systems and a low rate of absorption into the body, and independent testing confirmed it does not break down into benzene, a separate contamination story it is sometimes confused with. The harder problem is what it does in sunlight. Avobenzone is unstable under UV, and as it breaks down it produces reactive byproducts, including compounds shown to be cytotoxic and skin-sensitizing, which is the source of the sun-triggered allergy it is known for. It also tested as phototoxic on its own in a standard laboratory assay, and studies on human skin cells found it damaged DNA and raised oxidative stress at concentrations not far above what a normal application delivers, with the damage getting worse, not better, when it was combined with octocrylene, the stabilizer it is usually paired with. None of this has been tied to disease in people, and absorption into the body is low, so the concern is built on laboratory and mechanism rather than proven human harm. But it arises under the exact condition the product is used in, sunlight, and there is a clean way around it: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are stable mineral filters that protect against the same rays without breaking down or generating these byproducts. Given that alternatives exist, the cautious choice is to favor them. As always, this points toward a different filter, never toward skipping sun protection.

On the label

Listed as avobenzone or butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane. The cleaner swap is a mineral sunscreen built on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which block UVA without breaking down in the sun. This is about choosing a more stable filter, not about skipping sunscreen, which remains worth wearing every day.
